Post by Danboy » 28 Mar 2009 11:45

Hi
when I try to search for my Ancestors who's surname is Ireland, I get a lot of links to the country Ireland which I do not need. is there a way to seach for Ireland (surname), without getting a stack of links I do not require.
Regards.
Danboy.

I assume you mean on Google, etc.? Its tricky. Something like:

Ireland Surname -country

might help a bit (doesn't show pages that mention the word country).

Another option is to include the forename and enclose it in ' ' eg 'Fred Ireland' which will only show pages with the name in that format.

There's an article on About.com called 'Google Genealogy Style' which has tips on searching a common surname:

http://genealogy.about.com/od/search_ti ... search.htm

Some of the place names in my husband's family are also surnames, and one of the surnames is also the name of a town in the area where the family is found. Maddening, isn't it?
