The Dorset OPC web site has an 1811 census for Whitchurch Canonicorum, in which I've found what might be some ancestors of mine. I only stumbled across this census by accident.

Does anyone know anything about these earlier local census, why they were taken, who by, are there any records of what ones exist etc? They could be a useful resource, particularly if available online.

Pre 1841 Census
There are quite a lot of them, although the information recorded varies from numbers only to something akin to the 1841 census.
Try Googling 'pre-1841 census' for a selection of what is available.
