Success!

The voucher for Find My Past which I bought from S&N as part of a bundle with Family Historian had not expired, and I now have credits which can be used on the 1911 Census site.

I've downloaded the household for my husband's great-grandfather -- and it seems he did remarry (something I suspected from looking at FreeBMD, but I didn't want to get the certificate just to find out).

Very interesting.

Maybe I am being fumble-fingered this morning, but I cannot get the search tricks mentioned above to work.

If I try the trick that Patrick posted, substituting a '3' for a 2 or 4 in the search URL, the address redirects back to the 4 and I get the same results all over again with no address at the bottom of the page.

If I try the comma trick, it says that I must have at least one character which is not a wildcard.

Do I need to log out for these to work?

I also failed to get the address trick to work today. It would seem from messages on other boards that the loophole has been blocked rather than that we are both being fumble-fingered!

The March issue of Your Family Tree has a cover story on the 1911 Census, and includes a wall chart with a census form.

In the story it mentions that the per-image charge is the same fee as TNA's Documents Online service.

The 'subscribe and get something free' promo item is a copy of Family Historian 3.

(The issue also has a story with 100 tips on how to save money, and a two-page spread of coupons, some with offers for subscriptions at up to 25% off.)

I know some of you have reported no trouble with transcriptions in the 1911 census...so I thought I'd let you know my opposite experience. I'd been very puzzled not to find my great-grandmother Maria Atkins in the census. I knew she was still alive as we have her in a 1912 photo. I'd checked all the possible remarriages and none of them was her.

It turns out that she HAD remarried, but under her maiden name. Her first marriage wasn't legal as her husband had been prevously married to her sister - this was illegal till 1907, and Maria's second marriage was in 1905.

And to make things even more difficult, on the 1911 census form there's at least one mistranscription on every line: and the place of birth has been mistranscribed for EVERY person in the household. Plus, Maria's daughter by her first husband has had her surname transcribed as Partridge, like the rest of the family, although on the form it clearly says Atkins.

No wonder I had problems! (I've reported the errors of course.) I'm especially pleased to have made the breakthrough today, as it's my great-grandmother's 150th birthday.

1911 Census subscriptions available in October

We are delighted to announce that the 1911 census will be available in October as a new subscription package on our sister website findmypast.com. 1911census.co.uk will continue as a PayAsYouGo-only site. findmypast.com is the only site to offer a subscription to the census.

The blog post describes the two subscriptions available, and breaks down the costs by number of households so you can see at a glance whether it is cheaper to subscribe or continue with Pay-per-View.

Just seen that findmypast is going to be offering 1911 as part of their subscription and people already on findmypast will be offered a discounted rate if they renew I think in October... Now all I want is to be able to use my findmypast sub for scotlands people........

Yes, the blog post also talks about the streamlining of FMP subs and the discounts available if you get a sub to 1911 Census and FMP at the same time. (If I read the post correctly, you have to buy two separate subscriptions -- but if you have PPV credits, you can use those on either site.)
