Family Historian User Group

Two of my husband's great-aunts were born in Massachusetts in 1900. The family returned to England in 1904, and she never returned to the US. [I have one possible birth registration in Massachusetts, but the index says (infant) [surname] so who knows if it is the right family or not.]

The 1911 Census notes that both were born in 'US America' and under nationality it says 'British Subject by [?]' The last word appears to begin with P and is partly obscured by the paper which obscures the column describing infirmities. Could it be 'parentage'?

At any rate, my question is -- would their parents have also registered their births in the UK, to assert their status as British subjects?

If so, where might I find those records? What was the custom for families not in the military?

I don't think you need to register births in the UK to gain subject status, as long as you can prove your parents were UK born.

I goofed when editing my message above. There are actually four great-aunts, two of whom came back to the US, and two in England.

Just trying to get my records in order before I order certificates....

P.S. I'll also check my copy of Ancestral Trails -- if I can find what stack of books it has gotten into.
