Ancestry.co.uk has London Marriages etc available, as well as being partially indexed you can view the original, copied from the church registers. This means you can see original signatures and it can save a fortune as you do not need to buy the certificate to get the information.

I discovered last week and have so far copied about 80 images. Saved myself a fortune!![smile]

I'm having difficulty copying the images. Any tips?

I just click on Save in the toolbar on the webpage (just above the image of the parish record page), its exactly the same as saving a census record on Ancestry.

I've had a wonderful time looking and finding so much but now comes the recording of each. I assume the best way is to make each a new source so I can link to things like occupation and residence. Until now for christening records I had linked them to a source for the the Parish and copied the individual's information in 'text from source'.
I've just started using v4. What's the best way of storing the images within a project. For the certificates I have a folder certificates then sub folders for birth, marriage and death. This I had set up in v3 and it transfered over to v4 when I set up the project. I'm not sure if LMA then christening, marriage, burial or if it would be better in folders within each parish? What do other people do?

I have a folder labelled Parish Registers with sub-folders for Birth/Christening, Death, Marriage.  I don't have many LMA images so, for me, it's not worth having a separate folder just for them.

The storage method you use probably depends on the way you would want to find an image in the future. I include the ID no of the person/people involved in the image title so I find it easy to track them down.  Having said that, I don't very often want to find an image other through a record on FH.

I have made LMA a despository stating in the notes that it is via ancestry. Then I created sources such as Baptisms: parish name, I use the where within source field for the rest of the information.

I create a separate source for each individual marriage though, but again I use LMA as the repository.

I forgot to mention that I have a folder called certificates & registers which has subfolders births, marriages, deaths, baptisms, burials where I save the images and photos of headstones all these images are linked to sources.

It works for me.

Thanks, Nick: I was using IE8, which told me it was saving the document (which it wouldn't do in the location I wanted) - but I then couldn't find it. When I tried it using Chrome, however, everything worked as it should.

I think this is because you're running IE8 in Protected Mode.

I would guess that if you add whatever the URL is when downloading an image to your 'trusted sites' zone it will work. I'll try and remember to have a look at this when I get home.

Assuming you are using IE8 and are looking at an image in Ancestry then:

1) Select Tools->Internet Options
2) Then on the Security Tab select 'Trusted Sites'
3) Now click on the Sites button
4) Make sure that 'Require Server Verification' is unticked and then add the current url (probably http://search.ancestry.co.uk). OK everything and you should find that whenever you view an ancestry image Protected Mode is off but on other sites Protected Mode is on.

Remember to only add sites to the Trusted Sites list if you really do trust the site not to have viruses, trojans, etc.

Hi Nick: thanks again...but Ancestry isn't an https site, so that doesn't work.

I'm fine with Chrome, but I'm surprised this issue hasn't come up for other people.

Yes it does work with non https sites if you untick the box at the bottom like I said in step 4!

And actually this has come up before and we both discussed the issue in this thread 2 years ago

Yes I had problems with saving Ancestry pages as you say in 2007. I followed Jocelyn's instructions about the virtual file and saving a page and it worked fine for a long time.
I am now on IE8 with vista and have started experiencing problems also. The virtual option does not seem to happen and if I save a page as you say I cannot find it again. I save the page to a flash drive and that seems to work o.k and then I can send it as an attachment.
I have just checked your instructions Nick and in point 4 have found that the box was ticked, have now unticked it so perhaps that will sort out the problem. Will try and see what happens tomorrow
