I know the sasines recorded transfer of property but wonder if anyone can explain the following (my ancestor is Duncan McViccar)
16 3rd May 1618
Reversion by Margaret n'Dougall in respect of a liferent grant to her by a young man Duncan McViccar...
17 3rd may 1618 sasine given to mr Donald McOlverie, on a charter of alienation by Duncan McVicar
18 4th May 1618
Reversion in respect of last given by said McOlverie to the said McViccar, the redemption price being 400 merks

You could try contacting the National Archives of Scotland where these are normally held and usually they are very helpful. If you don't live in Edinburgh, you can phone the Historical Search Room on 0131 535 1334 - they also have an excellent website with good explantions and email contact may be possible.

It looks difficult to know what happened in the end from reading the item.

Thanks for your help. I'm going to take a trip to Edinburgh to look at a manuscript, and i'll ask their advice on the sasines when I'm there!
