Sorry if this a a newbie question, I'm still finding my way around what sources of information are available. I was wondering if there exists anywhere, images of actual birth/marriage/death certificates (1837 onwards) rather than just the indexes? On microfiche, microfilm or whatever. Or is the only way to see the info on a certificate, to actually buy a copy from the GRO?
Thanks, Vicky.

Marriages that took place in church after 1 July 1837 can be found in the parish registers in exactly the same fromat as shown in a certificate.
If you know which church it took place at, you can therefore look at it in the relevant record offce/library.
For marriages in the Register office, the only way to see the details is to purchase the certificate.
Which county do you need ?
Look at UKBMD. some counties suchas Yorkshire & Cheshire have started to put the local register office indexes up on this site. For marriages, this does show the name of the church so it is easy to then use the parish registers.
You can't see birth/death details without getting the certificate. Sometimes baptism/burial entries in the church records would suffice but often are not as detailed.

Ancestry.co.uk has images of parish records for London, England: Births and Baptisms 1813-1906, Marriages and Banns 1754-1921, and Deaths and Burials 1813-1980. You do have to pay to view and download the images, but this can be a lot cheaper than buying certificates.

Don't forget that if the marriage took place in a registry office (after 1837) then it won't appear in the parish records, similarly with Non-Conformist, Catholic and Jewish events.

Thank you all for the helpful replies. I'm currently trying the ancestry.co.uk 14-day free trial, and as my family is pretty much Middlesex / West London based then the images are proving very helpful. My subs on thegenealogist.co.uk will run out soon and I think I might be transferring to Ancestry [smile]
