Hi,
I can find my great grandfather from birth in 1850 (I have his birth certificate) to his death in 1918, I have the census results for every year BUT I cannot find him anywhere in 1871,it is driving me up the wall, can anyone give me some advice ?
His name is John Juggins he was born in sunderland in 1850 to James Juggins and Mary Juggins nee Jackson, the cencus for 1851 gives John living with grandad William Watson but my research shows that he cannot be his grandfather as his reputed mother is William's daughter Jane Watson BUT the birth certificate confirms that John and Mary Juggins are his parents his mother Mary died three months after John was born.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In 1871 he would have been 21, any chance he was enlisted?

There is a John Juggins, Bricklayer, born Bedfordshire c1849 living at Mill Hill, Hendon, Middlesex - probably not yours unless the enumerator misheard his birthplace.

Could the surname have been mis-transcribed? Most census search engines now allow wildcards so you could search for him as 'John *uggins'

There are some possible matches with the surname Huggins in Sunderland and Guggins living in Durham.
