Merchant Seaman : Is he mine?

Post by Jane » 06 Sep 2011 08:27

My husband's Grandfather John Edward Taubman was born 30th March 1893 in Liverpool.

He served in the Royal Navy from 1911 to 1919, when he was placed in the reserves.

Searching the new Merchant seaman records on find my past I have found the following record:

How ever the birth date is out by 4 days which seems odd. The rating looks right on the 1921 birth certificate I have for his son he is shown as a Steamship Fireman. He 'looks' like on of my Taubmans, but the family resemblance is strong through out the family. We don't have any other confirmed photos of him to compare against.

What do you think?

Merchant Seaman : Is he mine?

I would say that's enough evidence to be convinced he's who you think he is. I spent yesterday trawling through the records and found 2 records clearly relating to the same relation which gave different birth dates. Unfortunately, no sign of my father or great uncle (the one who seems to have vanished off the face of the earth in the 1920's) both of whom were definitely merchant seamen.

You may get more from the crew lists for the ships he sailed on.

Thank Patrick, I have taken a look through the ships, but there are no crew lists for the date I have for him, I suspect he probably worked on the 'Short Haul' steamers out of Liverpool.

His brother worked the Transatlantic route and I have found quite a few references for him in the Ellis Island records.
