Finding a church baptism to match a LDS scan

Post by Dagwood » 20 Feb 2012 11:30

I have a relative Edwin Kitchener Piper b 11 Jan 1840 and baptised April 1840 according to the LDS record I find through Ancestry. However there is no image and I do not seem to be able to find a St James ,Westminster on the Ancestry list of Westminster churches. Can anyone help and provide some info or a link to this church and its Baptism register for that year?
Many thanks

I have found the following:
http://www.familysearch.org (free) search for Edwin Kitchener Piper confirms you information.
birth: 11 Jan 1840
christening: 19 Apr 1840 SAINT JAMES, WESTMINSTER, LONDON, ENGLAND
residence: 1840   London, England

http://www.findmypast.co.uk (subscription) lists the following which might not be your Edwin Piper:
Civil registration event: Birth
Name: PIPER, Male (unnamed)
Registration district: Bloomsbury
County: London
Year of registration: 1840
Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume no: 1
Page no: 75
[According to FreeBMD below Bloomsbury district was abolished in 1838 !?]

http://www.freebmd.org.uk (free) is always a good place to check GRO Registration Districts.

Lists ST. JAMES WESTMINSTER REGISTRATION DISTRICT
Follow the link for fuller details.

FreeBMD also lists Piper Male Bloomsbury I 75
same as FMP.

Remember by no means are all the Parish records for Baptisms online at Ancestry.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ch ... estminster

There are 3 Churches dedicated to St James in Westminster.

Try this link for details of the holdings

On Ancestry the church is listed under Westminster->Picadilly, St James but it only seems to go up to 1833 on Ancestry.

I confirmed that this is same church as the one referred to on Familysearch by selecting someone at random from an 1833 baptism on the Ancestry image for Picadilly, St James and when I found them on FamilySearch it was listed as St James, Westminster.

The St James Westminster Registration District is named after St James's Square, City of Westminster, London SW1Y.

Just a few hundred yards north-west is St James's Church, Piccadilly Market, 197 Piccadilly, London W1J 9LL.

Both these addresses are easily located with further contact details on Google Maps.
