One-street studies

Post by jmurphy » 13 Mar 2012 04:05

I'm trying to get my records organized for the upcoming release of the 1940 Census. There's an excellent tutorial and set of finding aids on Stephen P. Morse's One-Step Web pages (for the 'How to Access the 1940 Census' tutorial, start here: http://stevemorse.org/census/quiz.php), including translation tools to find the 1940 ED from the 1930 ED) [this is the US equivalent of having the right RG and folio numbers].

So if you know where your family was in 1930, you're all set. However, what if your family moved between 1930 and 1940?

I have access to city directories from the 1940s on Ancestry.com. Some of them have indexes of the heads of households listed by street and then by number on the street. So to find the 1930 EDs I will be looking for the neighboring families from the 1940s street indexes to see if I can find them in 1930.

The question is, how do I keep track of my search results?

At the moment, I'm making lists on Excel spreadsheets, but I'd appreciate guidance from anyone who has done one-house or one-street or one-neighborhood studies.

Thanks!
