Im getting quite far with Ancestry/FamilySearch records for my English in-laws, but Im struggling with the Irish and Scottish ones. So Ive been having a look on the net for books that might help me with those and/or some of the difficult English ones. Ive now put together my wishlist. But Im not sure these are the best books to get. Anyone have an opinion or recommendation? I dont have a huge budget for this, so Id prefer as few books as possible. I dont mind a bit of duplication if one book expands on a short section in another, as long as its not half the books repeating.
On my list so far:
Ancestral Trails: The Complete Guide to British Genealogy and Family History - Mark D. Herber
Tracing Your Irish Ancestors - John Grenham
Tracing Your Scottish Ancestors (National Archives of Scotland) - National Archives
The Genealogist's Internet - Peter Christian

Hi Merenwen,
I can't help with the books, but the Scotlands People website is the best online place for Scottish records. It is token based only, so it can get expensive if you are looking for a lot of people.
Good Luck

I have the first two and tend to go to Herber first, when I need to know anything. The Greenham is pretty good as well and covers Ireland pretty well (although it can't fix the missing Census data).
Personally I probably would not bother with the Genealogists Internet as in my experience these sort of books are out of date very quickly.

Thanks Jane & Steve, I'll ammend my list. I might still get the Scotland one as I have a suposed marriage in Scotland referenced on a subsequent English marriage certificate that I can't find on the website mentioned.

I also go to Herber first when in doubt.
As Jane says, The Genealogist's Internet goes out of date quickly. Although there's an attempt to keep the links cited up to date at
http://www.spub.co.uk/tgi4/links.php, that page doesn't include any new useful links.
Don't discount
http://www.genuki.org.uk or local family history societies covering specific areas that you're interested in.

If you are on a limited budget, then my suggestion would be to buy Ancestral Trails and nothing else.
Ancestral Trails is huge and is a book worth going back to again and again (thus it is worth it to have your very own copy).
Check anything else out of the library, and make notes as you read.
