Firstly apologies if this is a dumb question - I have only just started out tracing my family records and there are no surviving family members who can help me.
The only documents I have on my grandfather is his marriage certificate to Bery Hatton on 16.3.1925 showing him as 23. Using Ancestry I have found a Death Notice for Q2 1969 showing his dob as 16.7.1901 [corresponds with marriage cert].
However I cannot find a birth notice for him. I have bought birth certs for AH Day's in Holborn, Epsom and Downham but they don't have is fathers name as Henry as per marriage cerificate. ??????
Also it seems I cannot buy a birth certificate for him even though I know when he was born as I do not know the relevent volume and page number.
Any help would be much appreciated.

First you need to extend your Death record search.
On FindMyPast a search for Arthur Henry Day born 1901+/-2 years, died between 1925 and 2006, found 8 probable and another 8 possible entries.

You could search the 1911 Census for Arthur Henry Day born 1901+/-2 with father Henry Day in same household.
FindMyPast could not find a match, but if I dropped his second name it found an Arthur Day with father Henry Day at 42 Edgerton Road Whitchurch Shropshire.

It is possible that some names on the Marriage Certificate are nicknames rather than birth names.
It is also common for nicknames to be entered in Census Returns, which makes searches even more difficult.

If you believe the date of birth to be accurate according to FreeBMD below there are only 2 possibles with both the first names.

FreeBMD as you can see gives you the references to order the certificates BUT these are the certificates that you have already got.

One thing to remember is that sometimes first names get transposed, one of my grandfathers was always known by his second forename for instance.

Using FreeBMD it finds the marriage that you already have in Rochford Essex. If it was a church service there may be a little more information in the church register that is probably available at the local record office.

Looking for other DAY / HATTON children born in Rochford shows these two.

They are probably siblings of Arthur Henry's and presumably you are aware of these as they were one generation closer to you, if not tracing their lines may glean more information.

Ancestry shows 12 Arthur Henry / Henry Arthur born in 1901 +/-2 in the 1911 census, like Mikes search on FMP none of them show with a Henry as the father.

Searching the WW1 military records on Ancestry doesn't show any Arthur Henry born circa 1901 as serving but these are, of course, the burnt records but I couldn't even find a medal card for him.

Good luck with your search

However, I think these are actually the children of Arthur Henry Day & Beryl Hatton.
Which makes them your mother and aunt, and if my guesswork is correct FindMyPast has your parents marriage as:

Molly P Day married Terence C Reed
Name: DAY, Molly P
Registration district: Southend on Sea
County: Essex
Year of registration: 1951
Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Spouse's last name Reed
Volume no: 4A
Page no: 1655

Name: REED, Terence C
Registration district: Southend on Sea
County: Essex
Year of registration: 1951
Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Spouse's last name: Day
Volume no: 4A
Page no: 1655

I would suggest you continue along these lines, just trying to find firm facts about your relatives, and eventually you may piece them all together.
It is unwise to jump to conclusions based on supposition, such as your Death Notice for Q2 1969 showing his dob as 16.7.1901, when there are several other possible Death Index entries that match.
That is, unless I have misunderstood what you mean by a Death Notice.

@martinreed, I have solved a few mysteries in my own research using the some of the incidental information on BMD certificates. Are there witnesses named on the marriage certificate that provide any additional clues?

Like the others I did have a brief look on FindMyPast and see a 2Q-1967 death registry entry for a Beryl DAY in Southend on Sea and then a 2Q-1969 entry for an Arthur Henry DAY also in Southend on Sea. I presume you are aware of a family connection to Southend which is why you have assumed that this entry relates to your grandfather. Who does the death certificate name as the informant? this could be a sibling, or provide another clue.

Incidentally, I did notice a 10 year old boy named Arthur DAY listed on the 1911 census in Prittlewell, Essex (which appears to be in the Rochford registration district). Arthur is reported as being born in London and is living with the BRADLEY family, but I just thought I'd mention it:
'England and Wales Census, 1911,' index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XWNQ-MRX : accessed 11 July 2012), Arthur Day, Prittlewell, , Essex, England.
