Adding unrelated individuals to an Ancestry tree

Post by Dagwood » 23 Feb 2013 12:38

I have been researching the final days of my Uncle's life in the Battle of Passchendale during WW1. As with so many Other Ranks there is no mention of his name in the Battalion war diary but the officers who died that day are mentioned . I'd like to add an event in his life to cover the day he died and paste the war diary pages as media for others to read. No problem there but I thought it would be nice to list the Officers names as they may well have been recruited from near to his home in South London as it was a Territorial Regiment. Then it struck me that others who are researching those officers lives might be able to see those war diaries if I entered them as unrelated individuals in either my tree or a research tree dedicated to my Uncle and his Royal Fusilier (London Regiment) Officers and men. I'm not being entirely altruistic as there may be others with more info than I have and it could prove to be a way of finding out more about them and their service records.
My problem is that I just cannot see how one adds unrelated individuals in Ancestry so that they can be seen by others who research them. I'm sure I have done this in the past but cannot see how I do it now and can find no mention in the Ancestry forum.
Any comments on my objectives and methods are most welcome.

Adding unrelated individuals to an Ancestry tree

Hi Dagwood,
The way i have done this on my 'scrapbook' tres (where i dump odd people/records that i may want later) is to create a dummy family link (i.e. put the unrelated person as a child/parent) to create them, and then unlink them from the family (via the edit, family relationships tab). They then remain in the file as unrelated individuals.

Many thanks Richard. They were of course brothers in arms so I shall put them in are research tree as brothers along with my Uncle and add anyone I find who was killed, or even mentioned , in the pages that describe the horrors that these young men of the Royal Fusiliers went through in those last days of autumn 1917 at Paschendale.
