Divisions in York Electoral Registers

Can anyone explain the reason for the Divisions as seen in the York electoral registers.

The attached image shows Sarah Burchell in Occupiers - Division 4 in the 1901 register but was in Division 3 in 1900 - still at the same address.

Many thanks
Brian

Try looking at the front of that part of the Register. Things seem to be rather more variable in registers than I had originally anticipated but the Crewe constituency had a ward in 1918 with the introduction (paraphrasing):
  • Division 1 contains the names of those entitled to vote in both parliamentary and local government elections;
  • Division 2 contains the names of those entitled to vote in parliamentary elections only;
  • Division 3 contains the names of those entitled to vote in local government elections only;
There's no Division 4 in that register but my impression is that a lot of the text is up to the constituency concerned.

Thanks for that Adrian

Unfortunately the Register goes straight in without any preamble or glossary so what circumstances lead to Sarah being "demoted" to division 4 remains a mystery at the moment, unless of course it reflects the woes of the local football team! :lol:

Regards
Brian
