Can anyone explain the reason for the Divisions as seen in the York electoral registers.
The attached image shows Sarah Burchell in Occupiers - Division 4 in the 1901 register but was in Division 3 in 1900 - still at the same address.
Many thanks
Brian

Re: Divisions in York Electoral Registers
Try looking at the front of that part of the Register. Things seem to be rather more variable in registers than I had originally anticipated but the Crewe constituency had a ward in 1918 with the introduction (paraphrasing):
- Division 1 contains the names of those entitled to vote in both parliamentary and local government elections;
- Division 2 contains the names of those entitled to vote in parliamentary elections only;
- Division 3 contains the names of those entitled to vote in local government elections only;

Re: Divisions in York Electoral Registers
Thanks for that Adrian
Unfortunately the Register goes straight in without any preamble or glossary so what circumstances lead to Sarah being "demoted" to division 4 remains a mystery at the moment, unless of course it reflects the woes of the local football team!
Regards
