Have you tried searching NZ newspapers through, say Napier Library or itโs local equivalent.
I did some searching through Canterbury Archives in Christchurch last year with good results.

Thanks to Malchal and davidf for the suggestions. I spent a fair part of yesterday in Papers past amd will continue to do so.
As for Libraries etc, I have recorded these ideas and will investigate when and if the lockdown ends in New Zealand.
At the moment all libraries etc are closed.
Kindest regards to all
Peter

I think Malchal was referring to the
https://www.napierlibrary.co.nz/ online newspapers and magazines as well as a range of research databases.

yes, well its actually fairly hard to join a Library in another area, mainly cause its the Rates payers pay for it all.
I have a couple of ideas how to get around this and will try.

You don't have to join the Napier Library as it is free to search its catalogue online, but I could not see any newspapers listed, so perhaps Malchal could clarify exactly what searches he was describing.
Maybe
Papers Past would be more fruitful.

I've been asked to find someone who might be still alive and living in New Zealand. All I've been told is his name is Gary Usher. He was born in the early 1950s in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. His mother's name is Joan and he had a brother called Kevin, who is now deceased. How do I find Gary?

I've found that using
www.rootschat.com which is free is very helpful for NZ records especially newspapers and obits.
