Hi,

Can someone have a look at the attached example and comment on whether they think Ancestry might have identified this section of the Ashover 1841 Census incorrectly?

The point of interest for me is on the right-hand page, so I have categorised it as:

HO107 - Piece 193 - Book 6 - Folio 41 - Page No. 10

Ancestry have it as:

HO107 - PIece 193 - Book 6 - Folio 40 - Page No. 10

The Folio, or Schedule No. is of course on the top-right of the page

Secondly, I have instances where my interest lies on the left section of a particular page. My question here is, does the Folio or Schedule No. carry on from the previous page, the number of which you can see just 'bleeding' through the page, appearing, as it were, back-to-front on the left section as you look at it here. So, again, if I use the attached image as an example, does Schedule 40 apply to the one over the page - and also to the left section of the page as you look at it, or does Schedule 41 apply to both the left and right pages in each as they appear here?

It depends on which page the family starts on as to how Ancestry label it.
Page 9 is folio 40 (pages 8-9) and Page 10 is folio 41 (Pages 10-11)

I think Ancestry have got it slightly wrong.
As John says, each Folio has two sides that carry successive Page numbers.
Folio 40 is on the left, with Page 8 on the reverse of your screenshot and Page 9 visible on the left.
Folio 41 is on the right, with Page 10 visible on right and Page 11 on the reverse of your screenshot.
So your analysis is correct, except that they are not Schedule but Folio numbers.

There are no actual Schedule Numbers in the 1841 Census.
They were introduced in 1851 as No. of Householder's Schedule and shortened to No. of Schedule thereafter.
They identify each household starting with the Head and can continue over from one Folio/Page to the next.
So a Household Schedule may start on say Folio 40 Page 9 and continue onto Folio 41 Page 10.

Although there are no Schedule Numbers in your screenshot, it looks like the household at the bottom of Folio 40 Page 9 continues onto Folio 41 Page 10, as it has the same Place name and the first person is a 10 month child followed by two employees. So it spans both Folio 40 Page 9 & Folio 41 Page 10 and maybe Ancestry have merged that into Folio 40 Page 10.

I agree with John*, i.e. the left-hand 'page' is the reverse side of Folio 40 and the right hand page is the front of Folio 41. Often referred to as 'Recto' (Front) and 'Verso' (Back) in transcriptions.

The 1841 Census is somewhat differently indexed on Ancestry to later Censuses in that each individual has an individual citation quotes the Folio, Page and Line No. for the individual entries. You should also find that, if you look at the individual source reference in a 'Family Group' which overlaps Page numbers, each entry should point to the correct Folio, Page & Line No. for each individual, but Ancestry's indexing is by no means perfect.

I thought that I was always told that the folio refers to the physical leaf and therefore Folio 41 Recto comes first, with Folio 41 Verso on the back of it. As advised above. I confess I usually write Folio 41 Front and Folio 41 Reverse because I can never remember the Latin.

However, be wary of assuming that this always applies - I've seen staff registers, etc., where the stamped numbers are the same on facing pages - i.e. folio (if that's what it is) 94 Left followed by 94 Right immediately facing. In such a case, the "folio" isn't the physical leaf and I'm not sure what I should call it actually. It's not a page, after all!
