Birthplace in France

I have an individual who was born in France but arrived in London during the 1870s to work as a chef. He married and had a family in London.
In the censuses of 1891 and 1911 his birthplace is shown simply as France. But in the 1881 census it looks like France, Erenis vise and in 1901 it looks like Erenis, France French Subject . See attachments.
I have not been able to find such a place. Does anyone have any ideas?
