How does one research an ancestor that is already in the tree?

I think that you will have to expand on your question a little more. What do you want from your research?

If you already have an ancestor in your tree what do you want to know about them? Their occupation may be listed on a census. Do you know who their parents are? If not search for their baptism or birth record which should have the parents details. etc etc.

Yes, please give us a few more clues.

Are you new to genealogy research?
Are you new to Family Historian?
What do you already know about the ancestor, and what do you want to discover?

The research methods also depend on what country and what date frame applies to your ancestor.
For example, if lived in UK after 1837 then formally registered documents exist for Birth, Marriage, Death, and Census.
If prior to 1837, then you must research Church Parish records.
Other countries are different again.
