Short Certificate of Birth-James Dennis Graham

Post by CurtisB48 » 06 Sep 2016 17:50

I have two different copies of my wife's deceased father's Short Birth Certificates. Both certificates give his date of birth as 5 May 1935, Registration District: St. Pancras Sub-district: South West.

The certificates were issued on the following dates: 1st Certificate issued 18th July 1950 by a Deputy Superintendent Registrar and has SW 23/193 which I assume is the reference number. 2nd Certificate issued on 14th April 1959 and has the following at the top right of the certificate PAS/52775/59 and bottom left 1B/39/193.

I would like to obtain the full birth certificate from the GRO but not sure if these two certificates relates to an adoption? I have tried to attach copies of both certificates but I get the following message:" File too large: Birth Cert Issued 18 Jul 1950.jpg" can somebody please help me with my problem of 1) attaching the documents & 2) how to find the GRO reference number.

Hi Brian, I had the same problem attaching large files and initially resorted to a graphics editor, Irfanview (free), to reduce file sizes and relatively easy to use but still time consuming. I run Windows 10 OS and downloaded the free "snippet" tool. This is easy to use, quick and creates an image with a small file size.

After snipping right click the image, save or copy and then attach or paste.

The certificate you should send for is the one listed above by David. If you examine the image of the GRO index there are no notes by his name. If there was an adoption or re registration there is usually a note and * to the bottom of the page indicating a later year.
I would hazard a guess that the short certificates were obtained for work or apprenticeship as he would have been 15 and 24 respectively.
Anne

PS never pay more than £9.25 for a certificate, which you should buy from the GRO government website (or a local register office). There are some fancy prices out there to get you!

As mentioned in Forum Usage Guide (4252) the maximum file size is 256 KBytes.
I will see if the error message can include maximum file size.

If you right-click the image file and choose Edit or Open with > Paint then there are Crop and Resize options to reduce size. Use File > Save as to avoid overwriting your original image file.

Thank you to David, jbrooks, Anne & Mike for your helpful replies.

David, I will buy the certificate Wilson, Pancras v1b, p39 Apr-May-Jun 1935 as I believe that I have found the marriage for James parents which I will be buying at the same time as his birth certificate.

jbrooks, I will be down loading Irfanview (free) tonight and see what is involved to make my files smaller so that I can post them on the FHUG if necessary, also I will try to see how easy it is to do the same for my larger family information files.

Anne, I have learnt quite a bit by asking my questions, I did not know that adoptions & re-registrations usually have a note and * to the bottom of the page indicating a later year. All I know about my deceased father in law was that he ran away from home and joined the Navy as a boy recruit which is why I was wondering why he had two short birth certificates. Thanks for highlighting where to buy certificates, I did know this and have bought quite a number from the GRO which is very easy to do online when you have the registration details.

Mike, I did not realise that to upload a file to FHUG forum was limited to 256 KBytes, thanks for letting me know. I will follow your instructions about reducing the size of my documents.

Brian
