What is the accepted form for publishing, in a book or non-genealogical journal, a term such as great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather? Is it 6x-great-grandfather, or great (x6) grandfather, or what?
Does anyone have experience of this with a publisher?

FH uses great (x6) grandfather but I don't know if that is a recognised standard format.

If we were talking a specialist genealogical journal, then either the topic is covered by their house-style or their editor should be able to say what the desired style is. Since it appears that we're not talking such a thing, then I would suggest that it's up to you. Just choose what you think the easiest thing is - my own view is that 6-greats GF or 6x-great GF is easier to understand because the English language usually works with the number at the front.... Just be consistent.
