Irish names into English

Post by sumac » 22 Mar 2015 12:32

I have found something new after over 15 years of Uk research. I was struggling to find a marriage having obtained maiden name from their childs reg. When I couldnt find the marriage, I checked other sources online of GRO records and wishful thinking that there might be a PR somewhere but I foud nothing. I investigated the possibility of more than one marriage in case maiden and former names not the same. I concluded in the end that maybe they were not married as sometimes seems to be the case. However I was sure they were married. Eventually I found that their surname had an Irish version which had been used to register the marriage. I have done quite a bit of Irish research but never encountered this before. The 2 names of 8 letters and 10 letters have 2 letters in common and not immediately obvious substitutes of one for the other. How did I find this out? Thanks to Familysearch. On one of their records for the English version of this name, they had the other version (Irish version) in brackets with no explanation for the brackets. Usually if they put something in brackets it might be a maiden name or other transcription of the same. I knew in this case it wasnt the maiden name and the transcription was clear. A bit of googling came up with a "translation" of the name and although not the same, very near. Further research proved that i had found the right marriage. Only problem now, which version of the name to record them by - I have double barrlelled it for the time being. The records where the registrations took place were the UK GRO records, and as recently as the 1920s. Bear this in mind that Irish ancestors may Anglicise their names when in England but may use the Irish version as well.
