Common interests / research

Post by Adrian Robinson » 16 Jan 2015 20:18

Hi,

Is there a place in this forum for members to state their research interests and see if someone else is researching the same?

For example I am researching 3 family names (Batt, Collis & Sampson) all from the Maldon, Essex, UK area.

I have moved this to the Research forum, and hope you find some takers.
I lived and worked in and around Chelmsford only a few miles from Maldon, but I don't recall any Batt, Collis or Sampson.

If enough of you want to collaborate, then starting a page in the [kb]|[/kb] would be one way to go.

I don't know whether there is a forum policy about recommending other forums but I think for these types of family research questions (as opposed to Family Historian questions) you would be best served on a more general genealogy site. There are many. The one I use is Family Tree Forum http://www.familytreeforum.com/content.php and another is RootsChat http://www.rootschat.com/ and I am sure that users here can recommend others.

Another excellent Q&A site is http://genealogy.stackexchange.com/. However, it is quite different from the forums that many of us are used to, so it's worth lurking a while to see how it works (and reading the help pages).

Disclaimer: I used to be a moderator there, and another member of this forum is a current moderator.

There is no problem with recommending other genealogy forums.
In fact two of the three mentioned above are listed in the fhugdownloads:forums|> Downloads and Links ~ Forums and anyone is welcome to add other relevant forums.

All,

Thank you for your advice. Although I have been researching FH for a while, it is obvious there is still a lot to learn.

I will visit the sites recommended, and ask the question there.

Mike,

Although I live in Wales, my fathers family are from Maldon, my wife's family are from Kingsteignton.

That's another coincidence as we now live in Torbay only about 12 miles from Kingsteignton!

I was born in Chelmsford and raised in Ilford, went to Sheffield University, but then worked in Chelmsford, Writtle, and Hatfield Peverel, so I am an 'Essex boy' I guess.

Definitely an essex boy ;) I was in essex from 5-21 so was there long enough. Went to uni in hull and everyone asked about white stilettos! No longer have that issue in Melbourne.
