Thanks Mervyn, I've been searching for something like them, and it seems the 'sharing' feature between Heredis for Mac/Windows/iOS/Android has moved on from the File > Prepare for method to the Share button method.
Sharing on local network
Heredis is open to other platforms and can exchange data with any device which has an up-to-date version of Heredis: another Mac, a PC, an iOS or an Android device.
From your Mac/PC click on Share button to link your family tree with a remote device connected to your WiFi or Ethernet network.

Yes Mike that is correct for a Mac I don't know for Windows.

I have a friend with Heredis 2017 and will pop in and see them over the weekend and update this thread with information from what I find in the current version on a Mac.

I have now updated to Heredis 2017 on my Windows 10 PC and it has as before the File > Prepare for > Andoid/iTunes commands, but the File > Share on Local Network command does not detect my Android tablet via WiFi or USB.

So it seems there are inconsistencies in the Heredis guides and difference between Windows and Mac versions.

I can understand that the Mac to iOS synchronisation may well be special as they are both Apple devices.

Hopefully, the KB can be updated to described all the viable options.

Valkrider wrote:An ePub book is only a collection of html files in a zip wrapper so it is not a surprise that Goodreader can display a website created from FH in this way.

If a static display of of an FH project is required then creating an ePub book may be a better option due to the links etc that are generated.
I have created a website from the FH Sample Project just using FH and the default options. I then converted the resulting website into an ePub book. As it is just over 1 meg in size it is too large to upload here so I have put it on Google Drive if anyone wants to take a look.

I was interested in this Valkrider - tho didnt have time to look at your output till now. I downloaded your file ( that was the only option) and then selected Adobe to read it which Adobe declines. It suggested that the file might have got damaged through compression or download?

I am using Windows7 and have Kindle - What should I do about an epub reader? I realise the object of this is to put fh on an ipad - I was just interested to see a full epub output.

Evelyn, use the free Adobe Digital Editions from http://www.adobe.com/uk/solutions/ebook ... tions.html and on its Download tab install the Download Digital Edition 4.5.4 Windows (8.24MB).

Mike Thank you. I took your route.
(apologies that KIndle on a windows desk top computer proved unwilling to depart from Amazon library)

Is this epub generated from the Publish book option on fh, and if so how is it done?
Or as an additional question, how does one get fh to produce a report that includes everything one has written into a Project.

Working within fh would avoid my route of exporting a Gedcom to Gedsite. Tho I do not want to discourage use of Gedsite.

Evelyn, can you ask those questions in the FH General Usage Forum please, as it involves a number of FH Publish commands, and non-FH tools.

Mike

I have looked at my friends Heredis 2017 Mac version. In the File menu there is no Prepare for iTunes only Prepare for Android, Sync by USB and Share on local network.

Share on local network relies on the Heredis app being open on the iPhone /iPad and it then imports directly into Heredis on the iOS device.

That is really helpful Colin, and is identical to Heredis for Windows 2017 except for the lack of Prepare for iTunes.

I have now even got my Android tablet to Share on Local Network via WiFi including Media.

So I'll add a bit more detail to plugins:help:export_gedcom_file:her_heredis_by_bsd_concept#import_details|> Export Gedcom File ~ (HER) Heredis by BSD Concept > Import Details.
It makes Heredis one of the most comprehensive and FREE products, but it's a pity it does NOT support Unicode UTF-8.

Hi Mike,

How will I know when you have updated the KB to cover these points.

Thanks

It is already done.
Once you have imported your Gedcom & Media into Heredis for Windows open Heredis for iOS on your iPad.
Then with the iPad connected via WiFi and the project open in Heredis for Windows use File > Share on Local Network.
Your iPad should be listed, so you just click the Share button, and Accept on the iPad.

BTW: The technique is exactly the same for Heredis for Android on a tablet.

I notice that it states Gedcom and Media.
Is the Media separate

I was using Tools>Plugins > Export 'Gedcom File' after doing the checks.

Then export mode Heredis (HER)
ANSI.......,1252
(PART~LMO)
Include

Tick - Use JPEG

THEN EXPORT GEDCOM & Media files>

Close Plugin

Did you read the plugins:help:export_gedcom_file:her_heredis_by_bsd_concept#import_details|> Import Details advice?

When you use the Heredis for Windows command Open a GEDCOM File just accept all the default options to load the project and its media.

The Gedcom and Media are separate files but coupled together ~ why do you ask?

Hi, Interesting afternoon recently.

Used the “Check Installed Plugins Against the store”
All up to date.
Then wanted Current FH7 project on iPad.
Ran Export GEDCOM File plug-in.

Tried to open The GEDCOM with Heredis 22 on iPad - Failed
Tried to open the GEDCOM with Heredis 22 on PC -Failed

Tried to open GEDCOM with Heredis 21 on iPad - success!
Tried to open GEDCOM with Heredis 22 on PC - success!

Anyone else had similar experience?

Does the Plug-in need updating?

Please.
Happy Easter

Thank you for that feedback.
Heredis seem to update the product each year but usually does not need updates to the plugin.
Let me update my Heredis copy to the 2022 version and investigate so I can make whatever plugin changes are needed.

Sorry for butting in... but I recall reading somewhere that Heredis 2022 on mobile devices doesn't import GEDCOMs, only files in a Heredis 2022 format. Certainly I couldn't import a GEDCOM on my Android phone.

Re: gedcom files and ipad

@Woodg: Yes, you are correct. The GEDCOM must be imported into Heredis for Windows and then use Heredis for iOS on the iPad to migrate the data.

@Malchal: I've run the Export Gedcom File plugin latest Version 5.0 against my test project and the GEDCOM produced imports to Heredis 2022 without any obvious errors.

So please confirm exactly what you are doing.
Which version of the Export Gedcom File plugin are you using?
Are you using the default (HER) Heredis by BSD Concept settings?
Exactly how are you importing the GEDCOM into Heredis for Windows?
Exactly how are you importing the GEDCOM into Heredis for iOS?
Exactly what error messages are you getting? A screenshot would be useful.
If you export the Family Historian Sample Project does it work Ok or fail?

Bummer. I was hoping I was wrong. I've been looking for an Android app to view my data (as created from FH) on my phone. I don't really want to go through another program to do so. Anyway, I'm getting off topic here. Hopefully you can help Malchal with his issues.

Hi,

I have used Heredis for years, I have been using version 2022 for several months now and have no issues importing a GedCom from FH 7, Whilst I do not have an iPad I use the android option of Heredis. I use Mike Tate's Export Gedcom plugin to achieve this, first into Heredis PC and then from that to android. It works perfectly, as others have said, The tablet version, in my case, Android, will only open a file saved from Heredis desktop, it will not import a GedCom file.
