Thanks, Tatewise. I use 'FreeOCR' which works very well I find.
I don't generally want to paste it into FH, my purpose being to create an electronic version of the memoirs, all 12 A4 lever arch files of it - more akin to the message posted today re (auto)biographies. However joining several images into one Iran view image will still save time overall so thanks for the very useful advice.

Merging PDF's into one document
Given the level of interest in this thread I thought I'd bring you up to date with my progress.
Using Irfanview I successfully created a single PDF document from 75 jpegs but as the original page numbering, and some later inserts made by my mother on the backs of pages she had written on, resulted in a number of pages being out of sequence I had to renumber the pages before re-creating the pdf document.
If anyone else is attempting this please note that it is wise to number the first nine pages 01,02 ,03 etc and not 1,2,3.etc as pages end up all over the place. As a consequence I found the most successful method for me was to rejig pages into the correct location having added a suffix e.g. if p 68 should have been p 04 I numbered it 03.1 and it repositioned itself between pp 3 and 4
When all pages were in the right position I selected them all while using Irfanview's facility to create a multipage PDF document and within seconds I had a document I can now use on my iPad and send to family members without them having to open 75 single jpegs or pdf's!
I'm now thinking of interspersing the Life Story with photos of my mother from her birth and childhood in Glasgow almost 100 years ago, through her life in London from 1935 up to her death in 2001. A document that will mean so much to so many family members and which as 75 separate images would have been a real pain to get through.
I don't see any problems now in adding pages or photos as I can go back to the renumbered set and insert pages with the suffixes I described above and then recreate the PDF.
I'm really grateful for the advice given by PeterR and Tatewise as I now have the ability to create a dynamic and, for our family, historic document describing a wonderful lady's life through the period 1914 to 2001.

I am not sure if you noticed, but the Create multipage PDF file dialogue has Move files up and Move files down buttons, as well as a Sort files button with several options.
These can override the natural sort order by filename that I suspect you are utilising.

You were spot on Mike, in my eagerness to start using Irfanview and try out the multiple page PDF technique I had completely missed that. I'll make a point now of going back to the menus and working thro' them and the HELP pages. Many thanks,
Dagwood
