FH on USB stick
I use a couple of computers and want to know if I can put everything on 1 USB memory stick.
i.e. can I install the FH program itself onto a memory stick or does this have to be on each computer I use?
I want to have the program, all my images, settings etc in one place so I can work from a master copy (obviously backing up on a main computer).
If this is possible what sort of size stick would I need?[question]

FH on USB stick
FH can't be installed on a memory stick.
You could store your data (gedcom, images etc) on the stick, but I suspect you will find any work with images will be slow as the read rate on the sticks is slow compared to hard disk access.
Another option is to use syncback or synccentre to keep your hard disk versions in line with your Stick versions.
With regard to size, it will depend on the size of your data and what else you need to store.
With Sticks you should also consider using some sort of encryption as they are very easy to loose (voice of experience) and if your master gedcom file is on it, it will contain many peoples dates etc.

FH on USB stick
I have to say that whilst I use a laptop for FH, I do back up my data on a portable disk drive. Occasionally I'm forced to use another PC and transfer whatever data I find via a USB key. I would therefore be interested in what methods of encryption exist. Although I've never lost a USB key, this would seem a prudent thing to do. Any advice?

While Jane is correct in stating FH cannot be 'installed' onto a usb stick it certainly can be 'compiled' onto one.
I run v3.1 successfully and its a handy thing to have.
Not considered encryption but I think this is a wise move if you carry living relatives data around

FH on USB stick
Just recieved my v4 upgrade disc and recompiled it to a single standalone file and it runs fine off a usb stick - not tested it as a 'project' as I only need to work on the ged file when out and about or at work but am guessing it'll be fine.[cool]

Er what does 'recompiling' mean -idiots guide for us non techies would be handy if possible - pretty please? Or is it in the knowledge base already?

Yes i would be intrested to use FH from a usb stick. Rootsmagic 3 works but i have been with FH since 2002 and would love to use it in this way.
