Not being a professional genealogist,
I would welcome advise about good practice, on the recording of census sources? By this I mean does one create a census source record for each family member for each year of each census that they appear in, which to me seems very cumbersome, or as I was thinking, 'following the head of the family' and creating links to that respective record for each other family member. I have now collected a lot of census records and have started using the excellent programme created by Simon (I think) to enter the data, and it has me wondering.

Nick's Gedcom census is the best way to enter data.
There are two schools of thought for census which Gedcom census supports.
1. One source per Census
2. One source per Family group/page
I use the second, creating a single source for each page of family members. For families over two pages I attach both page images to a single source record.
I then use the program to add
1. Census event per person.
2. An occupation attribute for each person with a listed occupation.
Plus for those who gain an estimated birth date a birth attribute, all the people, events and attributes are referenced back to the the single source record.

Thanks Jane for your help. The 2nd way you use is the one for me. It's something like getting a wedding group photo and linking to several records of individuals. My apologies to Nick Walker for wrongly attributing the programme. (Mental Abberation !)
I think that I have also miss understood the principle of creating source records for my BDM certificates. I've been creating a link directly from the individual's record to the respective certificate by going diectly to the multimedia record and inserting a picture of the certificate. I've noticed that when examining the individual's record, objects tab, I get my cert image but nothing in the sources expansion, whereas I do for my census entries. Does that mean that I cannot run a query later on to find out who's cert is missing. Is there a way to recover other than re-entering all the data?
I promise that I am trying to study the manual but the programme has so many features built in to it, I am only now beginning to appreciate how comprehensive it is. Any further advice would be welcome.

If you watch the Entering Data from a Birth Certificate How to that shows my methods for Certificates.
If the Certificates are set up as multimedia records you should be re-attach them to your new sources and paste the source where you need it.
