As a complete and utter novice... to genealogy as well as FH... I have everything to learn and seem to struggle over the 'simplest' of things... like currently, what to enter in the 'born' box when the date I have is of a christening. Is there a conventional way to filling it in??

I enter the christening/baptism date in the correct field and then put that year as an approximation in the born box as sometimes christenings are not always near the birth!

In the birth box in properties, I put in 'bef [christening date]' i.e. before the date of the christening.
If you click on the three dots to the right of that birth box FH will allow you lots of qualifiers (for the 'before' tag you need to look at the range tab) - I also make a note of why I Used that date and use the source facility to record where I got the date (and I also make a note of the date on which I entered any information too). The more info you give yourself now the less checking back later!
