Employee Civil Service records

Post by wyerd » 11 Sep 2006 12:44

A number of my relatives worked in numerous government departments during the beginning of the 1900's. Is it possible to view their records & where are they stored?

Thanks,
David.

David,

Most of the government records would be held at The National Archives at Kew.
How much personal info is included in them would vary. I don't know about pension records at Kew. The Post Office pension records in the Postal Archives contained full service records and personal details, but only for people who retired before 1959, so it may depend on the date you are looking for.

If they retired with a long service record, they may be awarded the Imperial Service Medal - the announcements of these were published in The London Gazette in the month of their Retirement.  They can be searched oniline at http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiv ... ?WebType=0
