Family Historian User Group

Hello all
After trying demos I have gone for FH.
But which site for information to build my tree ?
They all seem to charge a fee which is fine, but which ones would any one recommend for value for money ?

I think this has been covered before, and I know that I find ancestry.co,uk the best for England & Wales & C.I. as it includes all census 1841-1901 as well as BMD index. It has lots of other bits and pieces and I believe you can get a 2 week free trial.

I have tried a number of sites over the past few months including 1837 Online (now Findmypast.com), Familyrelatives.Org and Ancestry. Of the three my personal view is that Ancestry offers the best value for money even though their standards have slipped recently.

If its births deaths and marriages your after then you should also try freebmd.org.uk which aims to transcribe the civil registrations and whilst the project is still incomplete it does have a very good search engine and can be a very good starting point for BMD’s.

Finally if its help your after in tracing your relatives and you hit the proverbial brick wall then do try RootsChat.com This site is a messaging forum made up of over 36,000 people worldwide all researching their family history all of whom are only too happy to share their knowledge, and another thing, its free.

Now that 1837online has changed its name to findmypast I've got it next to FHUG on my favourites list (which is alphabetical).
