Just for the record, I agree with everything you wrote.

That's because you seem to have misunderstood what I wrote ... or putting it another way, perhaps I didn't make myself clear.

When I wrote 'issues arising from anyone updating earlier versions' I did not mean replacing a later version by an earlier one; I meant the exact opposite - updating an earlier version by a later one.

I know that even this way round is not safe in all circumstances as I have had a problem after replacing an earlier version of msvcrt.dll (the MS Visual C runtime library) by a later one. As I said before, I don't know if this way round could create problems with VB components.

Lol... I think we're all misunderstanding each other... When I wrote 'As for installing on earlier versions of Windows...' I was referring to earlier posts rather than Nick's specifically

I have sucessfully downloaded Toponymy and have been using it regularly. I have come across a couple of typos so far namely;

Brierly Hill
Chiselhurst

I do please... If they're mistakes in the parish data I'll tell Dave Bennett too. I have a handful of corrections already for places I happen to know about. When it seems worth it I'll do a new version. If anybody spots any where the map locations are wrong I'd like to know too.

It's not always as simple as it seems though... Chislehurst, Kent for example is on the 1841 census as parish of Chiselhurst in district Chislehurst according to the enumerator's schedule. I don't know about Brierly Hill... has it changed?

I should have added of course you can easily edit the data file for your own use with Excel or even Notepad (it's in folder ...Program FilesToponymy by default), but if you let me know I'll try to make sure your corrections get in any future release.

If you rename your own version, you can go to Files on the File menu, click on the filename in the right hand column and select your one. That way I won't overwrite it when you install the next release.
