Does anyone know if the name Polly is short, for or used for, or is it really a christian name? I vaguely remember some named Margaret being called Polly at times.

My Great Aunt, christened Mary was known as Polly; she lived for most of her life with her sister, Sarah, known as Sally, and they lived together, as spinsters, for their adult lives. Hope this helps rather than confuses!!

Polly is a nickname for Mary. Peggy (which is similar sounding and might be what you are thinking of?) is a nickname for Margaret. A quick search found this page which looks useful:

Thank you all very much . Nick you are right about the Peggy for Margaret now that you have reminded me. I remember my grandmother's name was Mary, that is why the Polly kept reminding me of my grandmother.
I have found Polly on a census and now I can sort out that particular family.
It is also useful to have another site for names.
Once again many thanks

Nick thank you for the names site. Now I know why a relative was called Jack when his name was John.
