Guardian Review

The Guardian on Saturday had a supplement on Family History.

I haven't finished reading it all yet, but there are some interesting articles in it and some useful websites. In particular for me, there's an interesting section on old photos and a link to look up old photographers, which might help me identify some of my mystery photographs.

They also reviewd various software packages. FH didn't quite come top, but mainly because it scored 0/5 for novice users - I'm not sure it's that difficult to use, and it was somewhat harsh a judgement, but the rest of the review is positive

Review is here

What did they find difficult for beginners? Insert your first individual, open an All Relatives diagram and just keep dragging and adding, what could be easier?

Interesting that it's only right at the bottom of the article that it points out how far from GEDCOM compatible the other programs are, despite saying in the FH review that this doesn't matter.

I also think it was a bit harsh giving 0/5 for novices.I have always found FH user friendly and of course the user group can always help when you get stuck! What could be simpler?[grin]

0/5 is pretty harsh BUT i do have to say that i recently started a new tree and I had to look up how to get started.

Ok its dead easy once you have entered your first few people but entering that first one can stump some.

Cynical me says that they had to make the other one come out on top for whatever reason - 0/5 is ludicrous!
