Old Occupation: ';Operations Chemist';

1851 Census shows this as an occupation for someone who lived in Liverpool. The family think he was also a ships captain - any ideas what this actually means - I assume the two things are not related.
I searched in old occupations and found nothing and have looked at on line dictionaries.
Any help gratefully received

Hi there, just a thought, but perhaps Operations Chemist would imply an Industrial Process Chemist (or Production chemist) of some sort (as oppoosed to Dispensing chemist or Pharmacist). First page of 'Google' returns also threw up several job vacancies which suggested this might be the case too.

that was my thought too (I googled) but this sounds too 'modern' somehow - his wife is listed as a shirt cutter...
I jsut wonder if there is a bit of obfuscation here given other information I have been given but this is definitely what the census says!

Wild guess...
Its not 'Operations' as in 'Surgery' is it? Anaesthetist or their assistant, one who makes the chemicals neccessary for an operation?
