Does anyone know of any websites catering for adoptions around 1885.

Before 1927 ine England and Wales and 1930 in Scotland adoptions were arranged on a private basis, either by individuals or by one of a number of charitable adoption agencies. Quite often children were adopted by other members of the same family. If this is so or if done in another informal way no records will probably exist. You could try the records of the workhouse or the parish. For semi official ways I would start with Barnardo's. They started in 1867. They would be better informed of the people and agencies that existed in 1885 in the area you are interested.
