I have just installed Version 3.1 and have spent quite a bit of time reading and clicking very button in sight! So far so good. However, can someone explain the 'key individuals'. I appear to have about 40 but I am not sure what this means!![confused]

There are several occasions where the manual and the help uses key individuals, my guess you have found the ones on the Everyone Chart, is that correct?

If you click on the List|Named Lists pane, I get:
Bookmarks 0
Key Individuals 40
Work in Progress 0

I did find a place to list these 40 'key individuals' but need to find it again!

Just found it!! If I click on the right hand pane it shows them in the bottom half of the screen. There are 37 individuals and 3 family groups. I can't figure out what is different about them. For example, my mother's record is there but not me or my father. It is not causing me a problem, I am just curious....

Records appear in a named list when you manually place them there. The reason why your mother is and your father isn't is because you didn't put your father's record in the named list.

Select some records in the record window (or in a diagram), click the Edit menu and select Add to Named List. You can then add the selected records to an existing named list or a new one.

If you delete a record from a named list, it DOESN'T delete the original record, only the reference in the named list. You can add a note to a record in a named list and it appears in the bottom part of the named list pane. This note is not part of the main record. Right click on the name of a named list and you can do various activities on it.

Named lists are useful to help categorise and sort and organise people. Flags are another method of organising. I have many lists such as Key Ancestors, individuals belonging to a certain person, certain area, certain country, work in progress, etc. I use flags to indicate if individual's details should be kept secret, which census they've been seen on, which country they were born in, do they need more investigation, bookmarks, etc.
