Toponymy 2, Trial version

Post by ChrisBowyer » 04 Feb 2008 10:02

Toponymy version 2 has a lot more information, and a significantly faster way of loading it. Also new styling and layout options, some new usability features, and general internal improvements.

It seems to work in my testing and general use. If anybody would be interested in participating in a Beta test please get in touch.

I'm game, Chris, though my use has been limited so far.

I'm happy to help, though again haven't used the previous version with great regularity - maybe the new look and feel will change that!

I'm not aware of the software but I'll certainly give it some hammer for you.

Me too, please.

I have used the current version a lot.  I find it very useful for sorting out peculiar place names which appear on Census records.

Thank you all for such a quick response, and great to have a variety of users. I've written to Jane asking if she can upload it somewhere you can get it from, but in the meantime if you'd like to message me your regular e-mail address I'll send you the Set-up in a .zip file.

By the way I've installed and run it on XP and Vista successfully, but I'm not planning to worry about any earlier Windows versions.

The message 'Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item' can apparently be caused by Zone Alarm when you try to run the Setup.

Erroneously reports 'Unrecognised file format' if the Toponymy data file it's trying to open is missing. Go to the Files form to correct or remove the entry.

Version 2.2 is ready (I think) for general release any day now, unless someone has had any problems they haven't told me about yet?

And thanks to those of you that have. It certainly helps to get a different perspective sometimes.

Toponymy 2, Trial version

Post by jeemo » 02 Mar 2008 05:49

Chris
Have just downloaded v2.2.  Extraction produced three files : setup.exe, SETUP.LST and Toponymy.CAB
Attempted to install but got error message
'Could not open the file named ../My Documents/../SETUP.LST'

Clicking OK produces
'The SETUP.LST file could not be copied.  Setup cannot continue'

Downloaded a second time with the same result.

Any suggestions?

I can only assume this is something to do with permissions... It's not the same error message I get if I run the Setup.exe without having Setup.LST in the same location. Have you tried dragging the 3 files into a temporary folder on the desktop (for example) and running it from there?

I have just downloaded and installed it with no problem, on XP.

At first glance it looks much improved.

Downloaded OK, installed OK (Windows 98 SE) but when I tried to run it, the following appeared in rapid succession:

Click OK and the whole lot disappears. Have shut down and restarted but the same thing happens. Help, Chris, please.

I haven't tried in on Windows 98, and wasn't proposing to support anything before XP, but I'm surprised it failed in that way (unless the Setup didn't work properly). I'll be able to try on a 98SE system some time next week... in case it matters, did you have any previous version of Toponymy installed?

No, this was the first time I had used it on any computer. Looking forward to hearing how you fare under Windows 98.

Chris

Tried the desktop suggestion but the error still occurs.  Will continue our communications off list.

For the benefit of anyone else getting this, it appears that Setup.LST was extracted (using ZipCentral) as a shortcut, but running Setup.exe directly from within ZipCentral works fine.

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone's Windows system was the same [grin]

For those of you that tested version 2.1, there's a mistake in version 2.2 so that it doesn't automatically upgrade your file list [oops]. If you've saved any changes (and want to keep them in 2.2), go to the Files form and add your custom Toponymy Data file, mark it to be reloaded (you should get a red check mark) then press Reload.

(And if you'd added your GedCom, you can of course just add it again in the same way as before)

It seems it will work on some Windows 98 systems (ok... 50% of a sample of 2 so far), but you will need a copy of the predefined data as saved on Windows 98. Ask me if you want a copy, but there's no guarantee that Toponymy will be usable, and I'm not planning to do anything explicitly to support pre-XP systems.
