Army death registration

Post by KSS » 03 Mar 2008 20:04

An uncle was killed during a live-firing exercise in Britain in 1942. I have all his service and domestic info and the CWGC info but I don't know where he was killed or where the death was registered. I can't find him on BMD searches and GRO at Southport have no trace. Any ideas? Did the Army register deaths locally or was there an Army central register?

From NA

British Army - Other ranks after 1920:

Ministry of Defence Records are still held by the Ministry of Defence. You can find details of how to obtain these records on the their website at http://www.veteransagency.mod.uk/servic ... cords.html

The above link doesn't work so try http://www.veterans-uk.info/index.html

As far as I'm aware deaths of service personnel are not registered with the GRO in times of war.

Family Relatives has some military records, but they may be PPV.

WW2 Army records are on this page:

http://www.familyrelatives.com/search/s ... iiarmy.php
Army Search

GRO War Deaths British Army Officers Indices 1939-1948
GRO War Deaths British Army Other Ranks 1939-1948
GRO War Deaths Naval Officers Indices 1939-1948
GRO Naval Ratings Indices 1939-1948
GRO War Deaths RAF all Ranks 1939-1948

The information can be searched on the following criteria.

· Last Name
· 1st Name
· Squadron
· Number
· Rank
· Year
Hope this helps.

Thanks, both. I'll look at those sources tomorrow.
