Surname Interests

Hi everyone
Please forgive my ignorance but is there anywhere on the forum that lists what surnames people are researching? If not can we get one started !
It would be useful to get in touch with others researching the same names

I would put forward the point that users of Family Historian are but a very small group out of all genealogists potentially researching your surnames.

A much better place to look for other researchers interested in matching names would be Ancestry's surname mailing lists which are world wide and not limited to a particular program - http://www.ancestry.co.uk/community/.

Welcome, Roy...some of us do put our surname interests in the 'generic signature' bit...me for instance.

Also Genesreunited. Finding a match with someone else on the FHUG site would be a very very unlikely so best to use one of the sites that specialise in this.

I also like the website Curious Fox where one can post queries or offer assistance to other users:

http://www.curiousfox.com/

Curious Fox has the benefit of allowing surname searching, but it is geographically based as well, which allows you to narrow down the surname you want in the area you want quite easily.

I have found it far more helpful to talk with people who are researching the same geographical area I am working on, whether our families are the same or not. Someone studying the same place may know about sources you may have missed, can sometimes help with lookups, and so on.

My friends from Curious Fox have helped me out with searches in the UK and I have helped with searches on the US side.

Thank you all for the information. I'll take it all on board. It was just that other forums I have been on have a similar thing.
Happy hunting !

I haven't added a forum section here for this, but it's easy enough if anyone wants one, but as the others have pointed out, it's generally better to use forums with a wider user base.

Roy,
Another good site is http://www.rootschat.com, which has boards for various counties in the UK as well as other topics. It also has a very good surnames interest page.
