Hi Everyone,
Wondered if anyone can help? I have an ancestor living in Sheffield for the 1841 & 1851 census. his profession is listed as 'Razor Smith'. By 1861 he is a Publican. What was a Razor Smith? My thoughts are either a Razor Maker (being in Sheffield, steel and all that) or a Barber? Can anyone confirm either of these? or was it something else?
Thanks in advance.

My guess he was a Razor maker rather than a Barber.
There were certainly a lot of them in Sheffield. See

There looks to be whole lot a Razor production in one area, which was flooded in 1865 (you never know you might find your ancestor in the claimants.

Thanks Jane. Looks as though he escaped the flood though.[smile]
