I have this happening alot in my small tree already. A male inherits a surname from their mothers 2nd or 3rd marriage, then continues to use the name throughout their lifetime. Would you report the person's real surname? Would your name records look like in FH? I can consistently report this already myself, I just want to do what is 'typically done' by most researchers. I cannot find a good standard way to do this after researching the topic. Thanks.

FWIW, I record the name the person used most throughout their life as the primary name and record any others as alternatives, with notes explaining the circumstances.

I record them with the name they were given at baptism/birth registration and record any subsequent names as alternatives.

I record them as true name aka assumed name. It's messy but it's accurate.

Birth name and then note any others using alternate name - in other words I treat it as I do female names that change throughout their lives!

I assign them primary name as their birth name. Then any changes after that alternatives or nicknames, as appropriate.
