IPad transfer.

Post by jsphillips » 20 Jul 2013 12:37

I am visiting shortly an AGRA researcher to help me. I have 1 Laptops and a stand alone. The laptop and Standalone both have v 5.09. The Laptop is very heavy and I am wondering if I can transfer any of the data for my visit to the retina Ipad I have ( a lot easier to handle)
Thanks

Is there any way of storing all the data (not photos) in a format on the ipad. I know I can use descendants by generation and save as perhaps a jpeg file. But is the tree I am more concerned with ?
Thanks for any help

Use the Search option on the left Main Menu as follows:

Click the Original Search link.

In the 'with all of the words' box enter iPad Android app

Click the Search button on right.

This will list several articles and threads of interest.

I wouldn't recommend using Android apps on your iPad as they might void the warranty.

Unless, Mike, you meant 'iPad ANCESTRY app'?

I use GedView which is in the iStore and allows you to import a standard Gedcom file, sans images, of course. A basic and simple app, shows descendant and pedigree charts which might well be good enough for your purposes. However, do not try to use GedView to update your file as it does not save a standard Gedcom file.

The search I suggested throws up Apps designed for both iPad and Android tablets.
You just have to download the correct version.

http://www.mobilegenealogy.com/gedview/ only works on iPad and iPod, but http://www.telgen.co.uk/gedfamilies/ works on iPad/iPod and Android.

An alternative approach may be to use PC Remote Control.

As long as your iPad (or any other remote device) has a G4/G3/WiFi Internet connection, then it can control your PC and run FH remotely.

A requirement is that you must leave your PC switched on, with the PC Remote Control software running, before you leave home (or have someone at home to switch it on).
Also the PC must NOT revert to a standby mode or idle state after a period of inactivity.
See PC Control Panel > Power Options > Put the computer to sleep = Never.

Note that media file transfers may be slow or expensive, and best left until you get home.

Another method is to use a public PC (perhaps in a library or register office) to remote control your home PC.
Some of the utilities do NOT need to be installed, but can be run in an ordinary restricted user account using portable software on a pen drive.
