FH review

just noticed this review at http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2476731,00.asp, looks to me like a journalist on a deadline with no idea about genealogy or how to test a genealogy program. Makes you wonder about other so called expert reviews. It pays to shop around when it comes to reviews.

Well, I wouldn't have bought FH from reading that review, such a lot of mis-information and half understood 'facts', I hope that it hasn't done more harm than good.

There is always going to be a problem with buying software on the basis of reading reviews. For example if you look at the Genealogy Software Review 2015

Then we find Legacy topping the list with Family Tree Maker second and RootsMagic third. If we look at

then we find RootsMagic as the best genealogy product of 2014, Family Tree Maker as the worst of 2014 and a dishonourable mention for Legacy Family Tree.

It might be useful to compare reviews to see why the conclusions are so different but in the end it comes down to personal choice. The review that started this thread is clearly written by someone without understanding of family history (2-digit years?!) but strangely has a subscription to MyHeritage. Best ignored.

When looking to buy anything I nearly always search online for reviews, but always give priority to those from real users, and generally discount reviews by any magazines, be they trade ones or general consumer mags.

If it's a subject or product that I already know something about, the magazine reviews are very often obviously shallow, biased, or just plain wrong, so I have to assume the same thing applies to reviews of subjects or products that I don't know about!

Me, a cynic, never :shock:
