Removing Malware, Viruses etc

After downloading and installing a copy of PSPad (a Unicode compatible text editor) a few days ago, see thread here: http://www.fhug.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=12234
I ended up with some malware as well, even though I'd downloaded the PSPad installer from the authors website.

I've now cleaned my system by following a set of procdeures and assistance from the MajorGeeks Support Forums, which I've used a few times in the past and found them very helpful and thorough. They also found and fixed some potential problems that I didn't know I had.

If you ever have, or suspect you have, a malware (virus, trojan, adware, browser hijack etc) related problem I'd certainly recommend this web forum. To get the best from it, it's very important follow the advice here, even before attempting to fix it yourself, which can make thing worse:

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 - "READ & RUN ME FIRST"

Before doing anything I normally post a brief description of the problem (which may be just that a suspicious entry has appeared in my Start Menu, or my browser toolbar has suddenly changed, or the browser home screen has been changed), and ask them if I should go ahead and follow the instructions in this "READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide". If they say to go ahead then make sure that you follow the instructions exactly to get the best from it.

In order to post on the site you have to register, but it's free, and I've not received any junk email that I can attribute to registering. For the techies amongst us the forums can make for some interesting reading as well!

I hope you never need it, but if you do then this is a good place to go.
