Gedcom Census Limits?

Appologies if this is the wrong forum for this question, but it may be related to my other File Compare and Merge problem. (see topic below).
I open up FH with my 35151 individuals gedcom. I then start Gedcom census, point it to the same gedcom file, answer the Options page with all the defaults, and wait, and wait... I can select the Census year, add Census place, address, reference, etc., but do not get anything populating the All Individuals or Immediate Family windows. Therefore I cannot select anyone, save, etc, etc.
My next thought was that it was my home PC not having enough ooomph to handle the file, so I (illegally) loaded FH and Gedcom Census, and the gedcom file, onto my PC and Laptop at work. Exactly the same symptoms, which sort of eliminates my PC as the problem. (Yes, I did remove both packages from both PCs at work!)
As the Gedcom was ported over from PAF, my next step was to strip out the 35000 _UID PAF specific entries, using a macro in Textpad, in case these were upsetting the apple-cart. Tried again with this 'new' gedcom - same result.
What else could be stopping the functionality in both programmes? Any ideas? Anybody else have a reasonably large gedcom file?
