I'm a new user so excuse my ignorance.

If I have a person in the census who is clearly not part of the family how do I enter them for completeness without creating a record for them.

How do I look at a census entry already inserted or isn't that possible ?

Non Family in census

Are you creating Census Source records? Here you record the census details and then link that to the various people concerned. This is best done with Nick Walker's most excellent program Gedcom Census found in the Downloads section here. It will do most of the hard work of linking the source record to all those people in the census so that you aren't duplicating all that work manually.

I record lodgers, boarders etc in the Note field of the Source. Or you could place them in the Text from Source field. You are right to record them as you never know when, at a later date, they may turn out to be family after all. In one particular Census I had 2 lodgers who turned out much later to be the wife's mother and father! I'm glad I recorded the details.

As for looking at a census entry, do you mean the Source record? The Source tab will show you your Source records. Also for any individual, open their Properties dialog and click on the Events tab. You see the Census events recorded there (with other events). If you click on the yellow icon at the top of the Properties dialog, an extra section appears to the right and the Source citations for every event will be shown. Click on the >> icon and you'll be taken to the Source Property dialog where you can see all the details from the Census you previously entered.
