I have tried using Nick Walker's 'Gedcom Census' and am very impressed with it. However, I have a problem, I have inadvertantly entered some incorrect census information that has been transferred to 'Family Historian'. My problem is how do I remove the incorrect information in the gedcom file so that 'Family Historian' is corrected and does not show in narratives.

Help would be apprciated.

Hi,
It really depend's on what the information is that you want to remove. To start you off through, here is what would have been entered via the 'Gedcom Census'.
If you go into the file in Family Historian, and click on the sources tab, you should find an entry in this list that corresponds to the census that you entered. If you selct the entry, and then go to the 'View->Record Links' menu, this will bring up a dialog box which show all the records on which details have been added which are connected to the entry added by Gedcom Census. From this dialog you can then either go to the individual that you put the wrong details against, or add them all into a 'list' so that you can go through each record in turn. Once on the individual, you can change/delete the items as you would any other entry.
If you are deleting the whole 'Census' entry, i would also suggest delting the source & multimedia entries after you have removed all the details from the individuals. You can doubel check that you have cleared eveything that way by check the value in the Citation's coloumn as it should be zero.

Thank you for your very explicit reply to my email for which I thank you very much. However, I am still struggling. I have followed your instructions and have managed to navigate to the person concerned in the census via the 'View Record Links' but cannot delete any of the displayed information. I am trying to delete the 'Source' but either everything is greyed out or cannot be altered.

Your generous help wouldbe appreciated.

Hi,
What is it you are actually trying to delete, the source reference or the individual event/attribute ?
If the Event/attribute, just bring up the window for the individual, and go to the Events tab, and then select the event and hit the delete button (the one with the red cross).
If it is the reference to the source (leaving the event/attribute behind). you need to bring the the indiviudal, then click on the button with the 'scroll' icon, to display the sources for the event in another window. In that new window, select the source and then as per above click on the delete icon (but make sure its the one on the source window!).

Not sure if this is where I ask this question, but can someone please help me?
I have a membership to The genealogist, and saving my census look ups as pdf, but gedcom census does not use this image, what should I do

Hi Pam

Gedcom Census will allow PDF files to be attached, just like Family Historian but really PDF isn't the best format for images, jpg is much better. If you link a PDF image to a source in Family Historian, the image won't be displayed unless you click on it, in which case it will appear in acrobat reader and they can't be embedded in Reports or web pages.

To attach a pdf in Gedcom Census just do exactly what you would do in Family Historian, i.e. in the 'File Open' dialog where you select the image, choose the *.* option from the 'File of Type:' list and then you should be able to select the PDF file. Gedcom Census should attach it correctly but won't be able to preview it.

Image files are not really one of my areas of expertise so hopefully someone else may be able to help. However, I'll do my best...

I haven't used The Genealogist site (I use Ancestry for census records) but if the only downloads available are PDF then as far as I know you should either link to the PDF as you have already tried or alternatively take a snapshot of the page using the snapshot tool in Acrobat Reader. You would then need to paste the image into an image editing package such as Microsoft Paint and then save the image in JPG (JPEG) format. The second method is a bit long-winded unfortunately and the image saved is unlikely to be as high quality as the PDF original.

You can copy from within pdfs using the camera icon, you may need to experiment a little to optimise the size, you can then save out as .jpg or .png format, I tend to use Irfanview for this as its very useful and free.

The Camera/Snapshot icon is certainly there in version 7. Perhaps you have an older version of Acrobat Reader. You can download the latest version here:

I'm updating some of the old Gedcom Census related threads now that version 5.1 has been released.

Just for information the new Gedcom Census 5.1 allows PDF files to be previewed when attached using Gedcom Census. However, I still recommend that jpg iamges are used instead.
