Trouble downloading Gedcom Census

Post by Pauline » 29 Jan 2008 14:51

I have been trying for several days to download and install the latest version.  I have tried clearing temp internet cache and starting again but of course the trouble there is that when it still doesn't work I have to clear the cache and wait all over again. It may be because I am on dial up in a rural area where no broadband available and the connection is eratic
so I shall be very grateful if someone can suggest another solution.  [cry]

Trouble downloading Gedcom Census

what browser are you using?

If you are using Firefox, go to 'Downloads' and clear out the list of files you have downloaded. For 1.5, a list which was too full (I think it was over 20 entries) would cause your downloads to stall. I don't know if they have fixed the issue with 2.0, because I got into the habit of using the 'clean up' button to keep mine empty.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Jan for your constructive reply.  Unfortunately I do not have Firefox but use IE6.
I have just tried download again to no avail. I'm going to do another search on my computer to see if there are any old files of previous downloads lurking, though I keep clearing the cache.

Trouble downloading Gedcom Census

Further to this problem, I have just found there are some PF files relating to Gedcom Census in my WindowsPrefetch folder.  Can someone explain what PF files are?  Would they be interfering with the new download? I don't want to delete them unless I know they are totally unnecessary.

Not played with prefetch, but as far as I can see on google it can be cleared.

In addition I have uploaded GC with a different name. So try downloading

Hi Pauline

Can you explain in detail what actually happens when you try to download from the link that Jane provided in her reply?

When I was trying to download GC for the first time, I could not download it with Firefox, but had to switch to IE to get the job done. So I wonder if you could get around your problem by installing Firefox or Opera and trying the download this way.

I know how frustrating this is -- I have installed Opera before and just can't get it to work, and can't figure out why.

I just tested the link which Jane posted in this thread with my copy of IE6 (under Windows 98) and the download started promptly and seems to have completed successfully. So I was unable to reproduce the problem with IE.

Sorry. [frown]
