In FH, female spouses are listed under their maiden surname, but on the Census (after they are married) they are listed under their husband's surname. So if I type into GC exactly what I see on the census form, GC cannot link to FH for the female spouse. How do we handle this? (Sorry if it's a silly question)

It's standard practice to record women with their maiden name. When entering Census data I select the correct person and then simply change the text from source generated to match the census.

Sorry, I don't follow. If I select Elizabeth Williams from the 'All individuals' list in GC, it will immediately appear as that under 'name' (bottom left of screen). I cannot then edit it to Elizabeth Hawkins as she appears on the census, because editing isn't possible. Obviously you're saying the text should be altered somewhere else.[smile]

Basically you enter the record into the source text box. Once you've selected everyone use the Auto Text button as a starting point and then edit the results.

The selections of people, ages and occupations at the bottom the screen are purely so that the census events, occupations and births can be linked to the correct individuals in Family Historian. The source text box is the place to transcribe the census entry. The Auto Text button will 'guess' at what the transcript should be but you'll almost certainly need to edit this a little to match the actual census entry. You can also link the census image too.

Some users don't bother with the transcript or image, some choose to just have one or the other, and others have both.
